2K Apologises for in-game NBA 2K21 ads, gamers tell ‘em to jog on

If 2K were trying to take EA’s crown for being the biggest douche-bag games company year-on-year, then they may have done just that with their latest anti-consumer move.

As the makers of the only up-to-date Basketball game franchise, the company wasted little time in exploiting this fact by implementing a truly ridiculous feature for the launch of their new title on next-gen consoles – unskippable adverts that played in pre-game loading screens.

This extraordinary decision was captured and shared by games site Stevivor, check out the vid:

This isn’t the first time 2K have made such a dick move, as their £60 game featured something similar in last year’s title. And that’s not even mentioning the dodgy loot crates that got the company investigated by the regulator PEGI after a complaint about an in-game ad appeared for a virtual casino, who commented that the game got “too close for comfort” as far as teaching gambling was concerned.

For such a massive sport to be reduced to just one franchised annual game, one that is happy to take the piss as much as this given the full price of the product, is a very sad indictment for all involved.

To be fair 2K have now issued an apology for their ill-thought out move, but in doing so insulted everyone’s intelligence by claiming it was all just a mistake:

If Reddit is to believed, gamers are less than convinced by 2Ks contrition.

User Pandrewbear92 commented “Why, when you pay 70 quid for a game, should you be subject to them making more money off of you when you paid for the final product? They’re literally making money off of us after we’ve paid them in full for the product. How is that ok?”

We hear you, bear man.

What happened to NBA Live??

Players could of course wait for EA to have another crack at the forever broken and or delayed NBA Live franchise, but we all remember how crap those games were when they actually did make it onto our systems – and EA hardly have a stellar record when it comes to loot boxes and ‘player first’ practices either.

Still, at least EA can feel smug that they’re no longer the worst games publisher as far as screwing with their customers is concerned.

And as for PS5 and Xbox Series X? Good luck justifying longs ads on what should be super-fast SSD driven loading times 2K. Think about that, playa!
