5 Games to Play if You Enjoyed Skyrim

When it was released, Skyrim was one of the most in depth adventure RPGs out there…

The amount of freedom you had made it a certifiable G.O.A.T in the game industry, and many RPGs have tried to copy its approach to open-world design. Skyrim is also known for having an absolutely massive mod community that creates all kinds of amazing mods for the games, and even mods that play the game for you.

If you enjoy games like Skyrim with lots of world exploration and character development, here’s a list of other games you may also enjoy. These aren’t necessarily “Skyrim clones” as they all offer something unique for everyone, but have similar open-world exploration and questing.

Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is literally Skyrim with guns, set in a post-apocalyptic world. It’s made by the same developers of Skyrim (Bethesda), so Fallout and Skyrim are very similar as they use the same engine and gameplay style.

Fallout 4 is an open-world exploration shooter, with tons of roleplay and character choices. You can pursue the main quest if you want, or just explore the game world doing pretty much anything you want, like hunting for treasure, building up a survivor community, or taking on side quests from NPCs.

Like Skyrim, Fallout enjoys a massive mod community. You can find everything from 4K visual graphic enhancers, to massive bug patches compiled by the community, or just silly things like lightsabers and Stormtrooper armor from Star Wars placed into the Fallout game world for your character to equip.

Fireboy and Watergirl

While most of the games on our list are open-world exploration games more similar to Skyrim, there’s no denying that Fireboy and Watergirl is a very fun action-adventure platformer, with some unique gameplay elements.

You’ll play as the titular Fireboy and Watergirl and must use their unique abilities to solve puzzles during the platformer-based gameplay. So for example, you will switch to Fireboy to traverse lakes of fire, but Watergirl to get through puddles.

The Witcher 3

The Witcher 3 can be likened to a third-person Skyrim, with more emphasis on slaying vicious monsters. In The Witcher 3, you play the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, so basically gameplay revolves around travelling the game world, visiting local towns, and taking bounties on monsters that are terrorizing the locals. If that’s your kind of game, you may also enjoy some io games online like Raid Land available on CrazyGames.

There’s a lot of freedom of exploration, plenty of side quests, and even a unique collectable card minigame called Gwent, which actually became its own card game similar to Hearthstone. The game was highly praised by gamers and critics for its combat mechanics, gorgeous cinematic detail, and multiple game endings depending on the player’s actions and choices.

The Witcher games are based on a series of novels, and it also became a Netflix series which is quite entertaining, so be sure to check those out as well.

Far Cry 5

Far Cry is a first-person shooter series known for its huge game worlds for players to explore. The original Far Cry was actually a very linear shooter, but subsequent titles focused much more on open-world exploration.

While not as in-depth as Skyrim or Fallout 4 in roleplay, there are still plenty of choices to make throughout gameplay in the Far Cry games. While you can pursue the main quest, there are also lots of side quests to pick up, collectibles to hunt down, and different skills you can invest points in, depending on your play style.

For example, if you want to play more of a stealthy sniper, you can put talent points into having silent footsteps, but if you want to be Rambo, you can put points into your heavy machine gun skills. So Far Cry 5 offers a massive game world to explore like Skyrim, but also some intense first-person shooter action.

Dragon’s Dogma

Dragon’s Dogma focuses a little less on open-world exploration, although the game world is pretty huge. Gameplay revolves more around the awesome combat, and it feels like you’re actually fighting huge monsters and need to form strategies to defeat them, whereas in Skyrim you’re just kind of hacking and slashing at the baddies.

One really cool aspect of Dragon’s Dogma is how you can recruit “pawns”, which are followers, and they’ll have their own unique spells and abilities. So for example if you play a magic type character, it’s beneficial to recruit tanks and fighters into your party, to keep the baddies off you. Or if you play a tank/warrior, of course you’ll want to recruit spell casters and a healer.

You can have a maximum of three pawns following you, so overall there’s a lot of different strategies and party synergies to try out.

Divinity 2: Ego Draconis

While Skyrim has you battling dragons, Divinity 2: Ego Draconis has you becoming a dragon. It’s a third-person action-adventure RPG, with class types you’d expect in an RPG such as warrior, mage, and archer.

However, you can also transform into a mighty dragon and fly around the game world to get between areas. So the game is kind of like two games in one. You’ll explore dungeons in your human form, but fly between game areas in your dragon form, and some of the dungeons are big open-areas that let you use your dragon form as well.

So if ever you wished you could actually become a dragon in Skyrim and not just slay them, Divinity 2: Ego Draconis is definitely worth a try.
