9 Tips to Improve Your Macs Performance

If you have an older Mac or use your MacBook pretty extensively, you might start noticing a few performance issues here and there.

Some minor issues like noticeable lags or a generally slower Mac. There may also be some serious issues like your laptop freezing and delays when you are trying to shut down your Mac or boot it up.

But, there are several DIY tips that you can employ to improve your Mac’s performance. Let’s take a look.

Clear your cache

A cache is a special type of storage that contains temporary data that helps you quickly navigate between multiple tasks or load apps and sites faster. There are generally 3 types of cache –

  • App cache that is created by the preinstalled apps and apps that you download
  • System cache created by in-built processes on your Mac
  • Browser cache that stores your history and cache data on individual websites

The good news is you can learn how to remove cache from mac no matter the type of cache pretty easily. You can either use cleaning software to automate the process or go into each individual app and clean the cache, clear the system cache through Terminal and clear your browser cache through the browser settings.

You may witness a noticeable change if you haven’t cleared your cache in a while or ever. App cache especially can take up several gigabytes.

Restart your computer

This is an unbelievably simple tip but restarting your computer can fix some of your performance issues. If you are in the habit of leaving your computer on sleep or charging all the time, all the background processes keep taking up more space in your RAM causing your system to slow down. A simple reboot can clear this up.

Empty your Trash

If you go on a cleaning spree, remember to also delete those files from your Trash. If you skip this step, all your efforts will be in vain since those files will still live on your system taking up space. You should also set up your Trash to empty itself automatically every month.

Make sure your computer is up to date

This is a simple but effective tip. Apple’s updates for your macOS include performance and security related updates. This is crucial to ensure your laptop functions optimally. Instead of looking for and updating your system manually, you can turn on Automatic updates that ensure that your laptop downloads and installs these updates when you are not using it.

Invest in anti-virus software

Although Macs are considered to be safer than Windows, they are still vulnerable. Good anti-virus software can prevent malware and viruses from getting onto your system.

The malware and virus can not only steal your data but also result in data loss or slow down your MacBook. If you notice a change after downloading a new app, delete it immediately and restore your laptop to the last backed up version.

Invest in the right software configurations

You are bound to run into performance issues if you try to use an older MacBook to render high end graphics. At the end of the day, it comes down to making sure you have the right configuration to run the apps you need or the games you want to play.

Overall, higher RAM and more storage are definitely things to look out for. With older models, it also may be possible to upgrade your RAM and storage. While this is not possible with newer models since it uses SSD, think about what you will need down the line and invest in the right amount of storage.

Run a diagnostic test

Sometimes the problem may be with the hardware. Apple’s hardware diagnostic test will help you diagnose the cause of the issue. If you see any messages in red after running the test, it is advisable to take it to an authorized Apple center to have it checked out by an expert.

Close apps and tabs you don’t need

When you’re focused on one task, say designing a logo, consider closing all other apps and browser tabs that are not necessary. These take up precious processing power and can slow you down when you’re trying to design. The same logic also applies to gaming. Make sure all other apps and processes are closed to enjoy a better experience.

Make a note of the errors

When it comes to troubleshooting, it is important to know what kind of problem you are facing and when it started. If there are any error messages that show up, make a note of them and look them up online on Apple’s support site or online forums.

All in all

Most of the Apple laptop’s performance issues can be fixed with pretty simple DIY tips. If you do find yourself unable to diagnose the issue, do not hesitate to take it to an expert as soon as possible to get to the bottom of the issue.
