Every casino bonus has a price, and the casino has already worked it out. The price is the amount of play you must put through before the bonus becomes withdrawable, multiplied by how much each pound of that play loses on average. Once you know how to run that sum yourself, a banner saying “100% up to £75” turns into a single figure you can set against any other offer.

This guide treats a bonus as a small engineering problem. We define the inputs, build a cost model, stress-test it by changing one term at a time, and walk two invented offers through it like a calculator would. Along the way we cover why game weighting and maximum bet rules exist, and why the 10x wagering ceiling introduced in January 2026 moved most UK offers from negative to positive expected value. All worked numbers are labelled illustrations; all rules are checked against the Gambling Commission.

How much does a casino bonus cost to clear?

A wagering requirement says you must place bets totalling a set amount before bonus funds, and anything won with them, can be withdrawn. Each bet you place loses the game’s house edge on average. Multiply the two and you have the expected cost of clearing the bonus.

Expected cost = B × m × h ÷ w. Expected value of the bonus = B minus that cost, before any cap or deadline is applied.

With the illustrative inputs, the counted wagering is £30 × 8 = £240. At full weighting you place £240 of stakes, which lose 4% on average: £9.60. The bonus is therefore worth about £20.40 to a typical player who clears it on that game.

Two cautions before going further. Expected value is an average across many players, so one session can end anywhere from zero to well above the figure. And the model uses the house edge of the game you actually play, which is why the weighting term matters so much. A requirement stated in pounds of counted play can mean very different amounts of real staking depending on the game.

How did the 10x cap change the maths?

Rearrange the cost model and ask when the cost equals the bonus. That happens when m × h ÷ w = 1, so the break-even multiple is w ÷ h. On a 96% slot at full weighting, the break-even multiple is 25. Any requirement above 25x on that game means the average player expects to lose more clearing the bonus than the bonus is worth.

For years that was the normal state of affairs. Requirements of 35x, 40x or 50x were common, and on typical slots they sat above break-even. The Gambling Commission’s revised social responsibility code on incentives, which took effect on 19 January 2026, says licensees must not set wagering requirements above 10 times the bonus funds. That single number moved the typical offer to the positive side of the line.

A negative expected value in the model does not mean you owe money. The balance stops at zero, so in practice it means most players finish with nothing left of the bonus. The model still shows why the old terms were poor value, and why a 10x offer on a reasonable slot now leaves something on the table.

The cap applies to the bonus, and its reach is exactly that. It says nothing about game weighting, maximum bets, cashout caps or deadlines. Those terms are where the rest of the value is won or lost, and they are the subject of the next three sections.

Game weighting and the cost per counted pound

Game weighting, sometimes called contribution, sets how much of each stake counts towards wagering. A game at 100% counts every pound; a game at 10% counts ten pence of each pound. Dividing the house edge by the weighting gives the most useful single figure in bonus maths: the expected loss for every pound that counts.

Casinos use weighting because games differ enormously in house edge. Without it, a bonus could be cleared on a game that loses very little per pound staked, which would make the offer far more expensive for the operator. Weighting evens that out, and sometimes over-corrects.

The roulette row uses a mathematical fact: a single-zero wheel has 37 pockets, giving a house edge of 1/37, about 2.7%. The slot and blackjack RTPs are assumptions for illustration; real figures vary by game and rule set, so check the information screen of the version you play. Weightings are also invented here, and every casino sets its own.

Look at what the table does to intuition. The low-RTP slot counts in full, yet it is twice as expensive to clear on as the better slot. Roulette, a game with a lower house edge than either slot, becomes the most expensive route once a 20% weighting applies. The blackjack variant, despite its tiny edge, lands close to the good slot because its weighting is so low, and it needs ten times as much staking, which means ten times the exposure to short-term swings.

What is a maximum bet rule controlling?

Most bonus terms cap the stake you may place while bonus funds are active. Players often see this as an arbitrary restriction. It makes more sense as a risk control, once you notice something the cost model hides.

The expected cost of wagering depends on the total you stake, not the size of each bet. £240 of play costs about £9.60 on a 96% slot whether you place 2,400 bets at 10p or 48 bets at £5. What changes with bet size is variance. A handful of large bets gives a wide spread of results, including a meaningful chance of a big balance early. Many small bets pull the result towards its average.

Bonus funds are asymmetric for the player: if the balance runs out, the bonus is simply gone, while a big early win is kept. That asymmetry makes large, high-variance bets attractive with bonus money in a way they are not with your own. A maximum bet rule narrows the gap, keeping clearing closer to the steady, many-bets case the casino priced. That is also why breaking the rule usually voids the bonus and its winnings.

The statutory limits sit underneath

Separate from bonus terms, UK law caps online slot stakes at £5 a spin for customers aged 25 and above (since 9 April 2025) and at £2 a spin for 18 to 24 year olds (since 21 May 2025). A bonus maximum bet is often lower. Table games and live casino fall outside the statutory slot limits, so on those games the bonus rule is the only ceiling while wagering.

Which terms move the result most?

Engineers call this a sensitivity test: hold every input at its base value, change one at a time, and see which change moves the output most. Our base case is the £30 bonus at 8x on a 96% slot at full weighting, with an expected value of £20.40.

The ranking is instructive. Halving the weighting of your chosen game hurts four times as much as moving from 8x to the 10x ceiling. A two-point drop in RTP hurts twice as much. The wagering multiple, the term every advert leads with, turns out to be one of the smaller levers once it sits at or under 10x. The terms that decide value in 2026 are the game you clear on, the weighting table, the cap and the clock.

A calculator walkthrough on two invented offers

Here the model runs on two hypothetical deposit offers, as if you had typed the terms into a calculator. Neither belongs to a real casino. We add one input the cost model ignores: time, using the minimum of 2.5 seconds per slot spin required under UK slot design rules.

  • Offer X: deposit £75, receive a 100% match of £75, 10x wagering, 14 days to clear, slots weighted at 100%.
  • Offer Y: deposit £60, receive a 50% match of £30, 4x wagering, 7 days to clear, slots weighted at 100%.
  • Shared assumptions: a 96% RTP slot, a 50p stake per spin, no cashout cap.

Offer X has the bigger expected value in pounds. It also demands six times the staking, over an hour of pure spinning at the fastest legal pace, and a daily staking rate that exceeds the deposit of some casual players. Offer Y returns far more per pound of play and fits inside a normal session. Neither is objectively right; the calculator shows the trade you are making.

We would add a practical filter to the pound figures. If the daily staking needed to clear an offer is above what you normally stake in a day, the offer is steering your play, and that is the cue to pass. The 2.5-second figure is the legal minimum, so real clearing time will be longer.

Cashback and reloads in the same model

Cashback returns a percentage of net losses over a period. It slots straight into the model. If it is paid as cash, its value is simply the rate multiplied by your net loss. If it is paid as bonus funds with wagering, multiply that figure by (1 − m × h ÷ w), exactly as for any other bonus.

Under joint guidance from the Committee of Advertising Practice and the Gambling Commission, an offer promoted as “money back” should return cash, not bonus funds with strings attached. So a cashback offer with wagering should be described in different terms. Read how it is paid before you count it as a refund.

Reload bonuses are deposit matches for existing customers, and the maths is identical to Offers X and Y above. The difference is repetition. A weekly reload at 8x commits you to eight times the bonus in counted play every week you take it. Run the daily staking figure on a reload, and if it exceeds your normal play, the reload is setting your schedule.

Cashback also has a behavioural wrinkle the model cannot price. Because it grows with losses, it can make a bad session feel cheaper than it was. Treat it as a small discount on play you had already budgeted for.

What UK rules sit around the numbers?

The calculator only works if terms are written clearly and applied as written. That depends on the regulatory frame, which in Great Britain has several layers.

  • Wagering ceiling. No more than 10 times the bonus funds, from 19 January 2026.
  • One product per incentive. From the same date, a casino bonus cannot be tied to sports betting, bingo or lottery play.
  • Your own deposit. The 2018 CMA undertakings mean you should not have to play through your deposited money repeatedly before withdrawing it.
  • Significant conditions in adverts. An advert has to put the need to deposit and the play-through terms where you will see them next to the headline.
  • High value customer schemes. Since 31 October 2020, a VIP invitation should only follow checks that the spending is affordable, plus documented proof of who you are, what you do for a living and where the money comes from.
  • Limits before the first deposit. Since 31 October 2025, new customers are prompted to set a financial limit before depositing, and any increase needs at least 24 hours of cooling-off.
  • Complaints. A casino gets a maximum of eight weeks to settle a complaint; unresolved cases then move to its approved ADR body, IBAS being a frequent example, at no cost to you.

One economic change sits outside the rulebook. Remote gaming duty rose from 21% to 40% of gross gaming profits for accounting periods from 1 April 2026. Bonuses are a discretionary cost, so we expect smaller headline amounts. The sensitivity test above suggests that matters less than it sounds: a smaller bonus with fair weighting often beats a larger one with a harsh contribution table.

Where the model flatters an offer

Every model leaves things out, and this one leaves out several things that cost players money. We would rather list them than let a tidy expected value do the persuading.

  • Cashout caps remain legal and cut the best outcomes
  • Low weightings can make favourite table games a poor route

The biggest omission is you. A bonus priced at £20 of expected value is only worth claiming if the play it requires is play you wanted anyway. Many players are better served by depositing without a bonus and keeping full control of stakes, games and withdrawals. What is the quickest way to price a casino bonus?

Multiply the bonus by the wagering multiple and by the house edge of your game, then divide by that game’s weighting. Subtract the result from the bonus. It is an average, not a forecast, but it lets you compare offers on equal terms.

Why does a low-weighted game sometimes cost less to clear on?

Because the cost per counted pound is house edge divided by weighting. A game with a very small house edge can offset a low weighting. It still needs far more total staking, which raises the chance of losing the balance before wagering is complete.

Is a 10x bonus always good value?

On a slot with an RTP above 90% at full weighting, 10x sits below break-even, so the expected value is positive. Low weighting on your chosen game, a tight cashout cap or a short deadline can still wipe that value out.

Does my bet size change the expected cost of wagering?

No. Expected cost depends on total stakes. Bet size changes how widely results swing. That is why bonus terms set a maximum bet, and breaching it can void the bonus and its winnings.

Can a casino bonus require a sports bet in 2026?

Not at a UK-licensed operator. Since 19 January 2026, an incentive must not include more than one gambling product, so casino bonuses must be earned and used on casino games.

How do I factor in a cashout cap?

Treat the cap as the ceiling on your result. The model’s expected value can never exceed it, and the real average will be lower than the simple figure, because the cap removes the best outcomes rather than trimming every result evenly.

Is it better to skip the bonus?

Sometimes. If the required play is more than you would normally stake, or the weighting excludes the games you enjoy, depositing without a bonus keeps your stakes, games and withdrawals free of conditions.

Once the multiple is capped, value depends mainly on the game you clear on, how that game is weighted, whether a cashout cap trims the upside, and whether the deadline fits your normal play.
