A free spins offer is a small probability problem with a marketing layer painted over it. What is one batch of spins worth in pounds?
Start with the face value: the number of spins multiplied by the stake per spin. That is the total amount of play the casino is funding. The expected return then comes from multiplying the face value by the slot’s return to player (RTP), the long-run percentage of stakes a game pays back.
Written as a formula, with n for the number of spins, s for the stake and r for RTP as a decimal:
Expected return = n × s × r. Face value tells you the size of the offer; the RTP term tells you how much of it survives the house edge on average.

The expected return columns are identical down the table, which is the whole point. Spin count on its own tells you nothing about value. Two pieces of information move the number: the stake per spin, which sets the face value, and the RTP, which sets the haircut. A 2.5 percentage point difference in RTP is worth about 22p on a £9 batch. That sounds trivial until you remember it compounds through every later step, including any wagering on the winnings.
RTP is a long-run property of the game’s maths, measured across millions of spins. On a batch of 45 your result can land a long way from £8.46 in either direction. The expected return is still the right figure for comparing offers, because it is the only figure that treats both offers the same way.
Where to find the RTP
Most slots publish their RTP in the game’s information or help screen. UK law sets no minimum RTP, but the Gambling Commission’s Remote Technical Standards require the information shown to players to be accurate, so the displayed figure has to match how the game actually behaves. If a spin offer names a slot and you cannot find its RTP anywhere, you cannot run the formula, and we would treat that as a mark against the offer.
Why the stake and the game are locked
Free spins almost always come with the stake and the slot chosen for you. Players tend to read that as a restriction. From a modelling point of view it is what makes the offer calculable for both sides.
The casino needs to know its cost in advance. If you could pick any game and any stake, the same batch of spins could carry very different expected costs and very different risk of a large payout. Fixing both inputs turns the offer into a known quantity: n × s × r on a known RTP, with a known spread of outcomes.
So the practical difference between few big spins and many small ones lies in the shape of the results, while the value stays put. A 15-spin batch is more likely to finish near zero and more likely to throw out a single large win. The 180-spin batch clusters closer to its expected figure. Which you prefer depends on what happens next, and the next section shows that a win cap tips the balance firmly towards smaller, steadier batches.

The speed limit on spins
The slot design rules that UK-licensed operators had to meet by 31 October 2021 put a floor under how fast a batch can run. Each spin must take at least 2.5 seconds and autoplay is banned, so you press for every spin. A 180-spin batch therefore needs at least 450 seconds of spinning, seven and a half minutes before any wagering. The same rules stop a game celebrating a return equal to or below the stake as if it were a win, which matters on 5p spins where many “wins” are 2p or 3p.
Stake limits sit behind the locked stake
Two statutory stake ceilings apply to online slots: £5 a spin once you are 25 (since 9 April 2025) and £2 a spin between 18 and 24 (since 21 May 2025). Locked spin stakes are normally far below both. The limits matter later, if winnings carry wagering and you choose your own stake to clear them.
How a win cap truncates the distribution
A win cap sets a ceiling on what the batch can turn into. Anything above it is removed. In modelling terms, the cap replaces every outcome x with the smaller of x and the cap C. The expected value of a capped batch is therefore:
Capped expected value = the sum, across all outcomes, of probability × min(outcome, cap). The cap never adds value. It only removes it, and it removes it from the right-hand tail.
Real slot outcome distributions are not published in a form you can plug straight into that sum. So we built a toy model: a 45-spin batch at 20p on a slot we assume returns about 95.6%, with outcomes grouped into six buckets. The probabilities are invented for illustration, and they are chosen so the uncapped expected value lands at £8.60.

A £20 cap costs this batch £1.25 of expected value, around 15%. A £10 cap costs £2.70, just over 31%. Notice where the losses come from: the bottom three rows are untouched, because a cap only bites on outcomes above it. Most sessions never reach the cap at all, which is why caps feel harmless when you read them. The value they remove sits in the 10% of sessions that go well.
One handy shortcut falls out of the table. A cap set at roughly twice the face value trims a moderate slice; a cap close to the face value removes a large one. Face value is therefore a sensible yardstick for judging a cap before you do any detailed maths.
Winnings caps and cashout caps behave differently
A winnings cap applies when the spins finish, trimming the balance they produced. A cashout cap applies at withdrawal, usually after wagering. In the model, a winnings cap truncates the spin distribution directly, while a cashout cap truncates whatever is left after the wagering step. The second is harsher on big wins, because you do the full play-through on the large balance and then lose the excess anyway. Terms should say which kind applies. If they do not, ask support before you play.
Does volatility matter once a cap applies?
Volatility describes how a slot’s returns are spread: frequent small payouts, or rare large ones. Two slots can share an RTP and have completely different volatility. Without a cap, volatility changes the experience but leaves the expected value alone. With a cap, it changes the value too.
Here is a second toy model with the same £8.60 uncapped expected value, reshaped to behave like a high-volatility game. More sessions end with nothing, and a bigger share of the value sits in rare large outcomes.

Compare the two toy models under a £10 cap: £5.90 on the steadier slot, £3.75 on the spikier one. Same RTP, same face value, same cap, and yet the high-volatility version loses well over half its expected value. The mechanism is simple. A high-volatility game stores its value in the tail, and the cap deletes the tail.
You rarely get to choose the slot on a spin offer. You can, however, read the cap against the game. A low cap on a notoriously spiky slot is a weaker offer than the same cap on a gentle one, even if every other term matches. Where a game’s information screen gives a volatility rating, it is worth a look before you start.
What wagering does to spin winnings
Some offers pay spin winnings as cash. Others credit them as bonus funds that must be wagered a set number of times before withdrawal. Wagering adds a cost, because every pound you stake to clear it loses the house edge on average.
Let W be the winnings credited, m the wagering multiple and h the house edge of the game you clear it on, which is 1 minus the RTP. A simplified expected residue is:
Expected balance after wagering ≈ W × (1 − m × h). When m × h reaches 1, the typical player expects to finish with nothing.
The formula is a simplification. It ignores the fact that a balance cannot go below zero, and it ignores caps, both of which shift real results. It is still a clean way to see which terms are survivable. The break-even multiple is 1 divided by the house edge. On a 96% slot that is 25x; on a 94% slot it is about 16.7x.

This is the cleanest way we know to show what the Gambling Commission’s rewritten rule on bonuses did. From 19 January 2026, licensees must not apply wagering requirements above 10 times the bonus funds. Because 10x sits below the break-even multiple on any slot with an RTP above 90%, the formula now leaves a positive expected residue on almost every realistic game. Under the old 30x to 50x terms, the same formula often went negative.
Your own deposit is a separate question
If an offer needed a deposit, the deposit is your money. The 10x ceiling applies to bonus funds, and a spin offer that appears to lock the deposit itself behind play-through deserves a close read and a question to support. An expected £5.88 on a headline of “45 free spins” is a fair description of what the offer is worth to an average player who follows the terms. You will not receive £5.88. You will receive some figure between nothing and £20, and the model tells you where the middle of that range sits.
Steps five and six do not have neat formulas, but they matter. A casino’s minimum withdrawal amount can leave a small balance stuck, and a missed deadline zeroes the whole chain. Treat both as pass or fail checks after the arithmetic. Running it yourself
- Multiply spins by stake for face value. If the stake is not stated, stop there.
- Multiply face value by the slot’s RTP for the expected return.
- Compare any cap with the face value. A cap at or near face value removes a lot; a cap several times higher removes little.
- If winnings carry wagering, multiply by (1 − multiple × house edge).
- Check the minimum withdrawal and every deadline.
- Compare the final figure with other offers, not with the headline spin count.
Which UK rules shape spin offers?
The formulas above only behave this way because of the rules around them. Several changes since 2019 decide when you can play spins, how fast they run, and how far terms can reach into your winnings. Read as a changelog, the direction is consistent.

The mixed-product ban removed a popular format in which a sports bet triggered casino spins. A spin offer from a licensed casino in 2026 should involve casino play only. If you see a cross-product spin deal, the operator’s licence is the first thing to check.
The duty rise is the one change that works against generosity. Operators now pay 40% of remote gaming profits in duty, and promotions are a flexible cost. We expect smaller batches and lower caps to be the common response, which makes the cap maths above more relevant, not less.

None of the minus points is hidden, and that matters. A cap is a term you can put into the formula. The problems start when a term is vague, missing or applied after the fact, which is where the complaints route below comes in.

How to confirm the casino is licensed
The model assumes the terms will be applied as written. That assumption only holds where a regulator can enforce it. Checking the licence takes a couple of minutes and should come before any maths.
- Find the Gambling Commission account number, usually in the site footer.
- Search it on the Commission’s public register and confirm the licence is active.
- Check that the exact website domain you are using is listed against that licence.
- Find the named alternative dispute resolution provider in the terms. IBAS is a common one.
- Look up how customer funds are protected: not protected, medium or high.

Is a bigger number of spins ever better on its own?
Only if the stake per spin is the same. Value depends on spins multiplied by stake. More, smaller spins at the same face value give a narrower spread of results, which helps when a low cap applies, but the expected return is identical.
How do I estimate the effect of a win cap without the full distribution?
Compare the cap with the face value. A cap at or close to face value will remove a large share of expected value, especially on a high-volatility slot. A cap several times the face value removes much less, because few batches reach it.
What RTP should I use if the game does not show one?
You should not guess. UK-licensed games have to display accurate information, and most show RTP in the help screen. If you cannot find it, you cannot price the offer properly, and we would skip it.
Does 10x wagering on spin winnings make an offer bad?
Not by itself. On a 96% slot, 10x wagering has an expected cost of about 40% of the winnings, leaving roughly 60%. Cash winnings are better, but a 10x term still leaves positive expected value on most games.
Why can I not raise the stake on free spins?
The stake is fixed so the casino knows the cost and risk of the offer. Changing it would change both the face value and the spread of outcomes. Once winnings become your own balance, your stake is yours to choose within the £5 or £2 slot limits and any bonus maximum bet.
Do free spins count towards the financial vulnerability check?
The light-touch check is triggered by net deposits of £150 within a rolling 30 days. Spins you receive are not deposits. Any money you pay in to qualify for spins counts in the normal way.
Are winnings from free spins taxed?
