Monkey Island Is Back!

Return To Monkey Island, penned by original creators Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, releasing this year

Fuck your Starfield and Harry-butthole-pussy-Potter Hogwarts Legacy; 2022s most exciting title was just announced!

Return To Monkey Island is a sequel to Guybrush’s original adventures Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, and I couldn’t be more excited about it.

The game is being developed by Ron Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox in collaboration with Devolver Digital and a new version of Lucasfilm Games. Original co-creator Dave Grossman is writing and designing alongside Gilbert. The voice of Guybrush Threepwood, Dominic Armato, will also return to voice our hapless hero.

A complete surprise announcement

The Monkey Island franchise has been dead and buried since the original Lucasfilm Games folded due to the fallout from Disney’s acquisition of LucasFilm.

In 2016 Ron Gilbert offered to buy the rights to Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, such is his desire to make more entries in the fan-favourite franchises.

Fast-forward six years, and it looks as if Disney agreed to terms, as we are soon to play the first true sequel to a Monkey Island game since the early 1990s.

A great excuse to experience adventure games for the first time

If you’re some Gen-Z squit who likes funny puzzle adventures but has never heard of these games, I strongly suggest you check them out.

Lucasfilm Games was the epitome of adventure games in the 1990s, creating such classics as Sam & MaxDay Of The Tentacle and Grim Fandango. But it’s perhaps best remembered for the Monkey Island franchise.

Spin-off games were created in the years since, The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape From Monkey Island and an episodic adventure Tales From Monkey Island by Telltale Games in 2009.

However, Return To Monkey Island will be a true sequel, with key creatives Gilbert and Grossman returning for the first time since the second game.

I have found my most anticipated title of the year, and given the shit-show that is many aspects of 2022, it can’t come soon enough!
