Top Ten: Free, Underrated Steam Games

The best games in life are free

MMOs are awesome, sure. But what about the sleazy micro-transactions? The 12-year-old screaming about how he ‘banged your mum’ after he loses a match? The slow team allocation due to one player being on a potato internet connection?

Sometimes you want the gaming hit, but it’s 3 weeks ‘til payday and you don’t want the MMO headache attached. But don’t you worry little simp! PC ZONE has got your back. Below you will find a list of games that are totally free and don’t compromise any of the quality we all demand. All are available for download from Steam now.

All games listed have a review score on Steam of 90% or above. So, standards are high, despite these games costing nothing but your precious time.

Enjoy the list, with the Steam user score next to the title of each game. And get gaming… For free!

Dagon (96%)

Dagon game cover

Dagon is a horror game based on HP Lovecraft world, which has been popular for decades for good reason. An atmospheric visual novel with lots of beautiful scenery and a tight focus on Lovecraftian lore. There are also paid DLC packs if you enjoy the original game.

Doki-Doki Literature Club (96%)

Japanese school girls comforting one and other

Weird anime game with surprise horror elements that give it a subversive, shocking and dynamic feel. For all its weird juxtapositions of schoolgirls and dark themes, Doki Doki Literature Club could only ever have been made in Japan.

Helltaker (98%)

Girl with knife and fork

Puzzle game with solid, varied gameplay, a quirky art style, cute characters and more sexual references than you could shake a Hell-demon’s bone at. What’s not to love about Helltaker?

My Friend Is A Raven (92%)

My Friend Is A Raven game cover

My Friend Is A Raven is one of the earliest titles by developer Two Star Games, the genius behind the now uber-viral Choo Choo Charles game.

A side-scrolling, fully hand-drawn Horror Indie Adventure game, My Friend Is A Raven is perfect to get the spooky vibes going while waiting for Charles to make his grand entrance.

Shadow Warrior Classic (93%)

Man shooting guns in a pixelated world

For all self-respecting retro FPS fans, this is a must. While overshadowed (see what we did there?) by Doom, Duke Nukem and many others at the dawn of the 90s, Shadow Warrior was a seminal and solid FPS title. And it has now spawned its own wildly successful series of games. So if you love this classic, try the sequels!

Transformice (90%)

A cute, online game with a similar premise to Fall Guy, in Transformice your mouse has to get the cheese and escape back to base before the time is up.

Vigorus (83%)

A creepy jelly fish thing from a game

With not many user reviews, Vigorus is a visually stunning rhythm game with an up-tempo, catchy gameplay loop. But it will need a little more support if a sequel is to be expected.

Viridi (97%)

a lo-fi digital plant pot

One of the highest-rated games on this list, Viridi is a casual, zen-like succulent plant sim. Hard day on the desktop? The crushing realities of Rock League getting you down? Viridi is for you.

Dr Langeskov, The Tiger and the Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist (93%)

game cover for a heist game

A first-person comedy narration game from the makers of the mind-bending The Stanley Parable, Dr Langeskov, The Tiger and the Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist is not to be missed.

Samorost 1 (96%)

weird dude

Probably the weirdest on this list, Samorost is a game where the player explores the world and solves puzzles. This edition comes with enhanced sound and visual features, building on the success of the original 2003 title. If you enjoy this title, try the sequels, Samorost 2 and Samorost 3

Are there any free and underrated Steam games we have missed? Throwdown those suggestions.

Tristan enjoys narrative-heavy games and anything that's weird and indie is good too. Looking to the future, he hopes to one day design his own board game as the central pillar of his astoundingly unimpressive legacy.
