Counter-Strike 2 player average sinks to lowest level since February 2024

Counter-Strike 2 lost players for a seventh straight month in September 2026. Its average concurrent player count slipped to around 805,000, the lowest monthly figure since February 2024, according to data compiled by dust2.us.

No previous run of declines has lasted this long. According to the dust2.us report, average player numbers have never before fallen for seven consecutive months across either CS:GO or its successor. The pattern points to a gradual erosion of the player base. A single bad month would look different.

Steam Charts tracker data gives a more precise picture. It records September’s average at 805,637.82 concurrent players. That is a drop of 2.38% on August, or 19,620 players. The monthly fall is modest in isolation, but it is the seventh in a row.

Peak activity still runs well above the average. Counter-Strike 2 hit its highest concurrent figure of the month on 23 September, when 1,450,705 players were online at once. The gap between that peak and the monthly average shows how much the daily player count swings, even as the overall trend points downward.

Players have been arguing about the cause, and anti-cheat comes up most. Alex “Mauisnake” Ellenberg is among those who have pointed to it. Part of the community wants Valve to move to kernel-level anti-cheat, the kind of deep system access already used by rival competitive shooters on PC. Supporters argue it would cut down on cheaters in matchmaking. However, none of these opinions proves why the player count has fallen, and Valve has not linked the numbers to any particular issue.

Not all of the reaction has been negative. Travis “Trav” Landaw Mott welcomed the arrival of the new Rush mode. He saw it as evidence that Valve is giving content more attention. Players have long complained that updates to Counter-Strike 2 come slowly, so new modes are one of the clearest ways the developer can give lapsed players a reason to come back.

For context, a monthly average of roughly 805,000 still puts Counter-Strike 2 among the most-played games on Steam. The professional scene has also kept its full calendar of events. The question for Valve is whether new content can stop the slide before it reaches an eighth month. October’s figures will be the next test. Steam Charts will publish them once the month closes at the end of October.
